Laser hair removal is one of the most-asked-about services among foreign visitors and expats in Astana — and for good reason. The price is roughly a quarter of what you'd pay at a comparable clinic in London, Berlin, or Dubai, and the technology used in premium Astana clinics is the same Western-made equipment (Lumenis, Cynosure, Asclepion, Fotona) used in those cities. So the math is simple: if you're going to be in Kazakhstan for more than three months, starting your laser course here is one of the best beauty-related financial decisions you'll make.
That said, laser is not a service to book casually based on price alone. The wrong laser on the wrong skin tone can cause burns, hyperpigmentation, or paradoxical hair regrowth (yes, that's a real thing). This guide walks through everything you should ask before your first session.
The four laser types you'll encounter in Astana
Most clinics will tell you they have "the latest laser." That's marketing. There are really only four medically distinct laser types in use globally, and each is suited to specific skin tones and hair types. The clinic should be able to tell you exactly which one they have.
Diode laser (most common)
Wavelength around 800–810 nm. The workhorse of Astana clinics. Works on a wide range of skin tones (Fitzpatrick types I–IV, sometimes V with care) and most hair colors except very light blonde or grey. Modern diode systems include integrated cooling, which makes the procedure tolerable. If a clinic has only one laser, it's almost certainly a diode. Brand examples: Lumenis LightSheer, Asclepion MeDioStar, Cynosure Vectus.
Alexandrite laser
Wavelength 755 nm. Faster and somewhat more effective than diode for fair skin (Fitzpatrick I–III) with dark hair. Should not be used on dark skin tones (IV–VI) — risk of burns and pigmentation changes is genuinely high. If you have olive, brown, or darker skin, decline alexandrite politely and ask for diode or Nd:YAG. Brand example: Cynosure GentleLase Pro.
Nd:YAG laser
Wavelength 1064 nm. The only laser that's broadly safe for dark skin (Fitzpatrick V–VI). Less effective on fine or light hair than diode. If you have South Asian, African, or Middle Eastern skin tones, this is the laser you specifically want — and you should ask if the clinic has it before booking. Not every clinic in Astana stocks Nd:YAG; the ones serving expat populations usually do.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) — not actually a laser
Technically a different category of light-based treatment. Marketed as "laser-like" but is significantly less effective and requires more sessions. If a clinic offers what they call "laser hair removal" at extremely low prices (under 5,000 KZT for a small zone), it may actually be IPL. Not bad, but you should know what you're paying for.
The Fitzpatrick scale runs from I (very fair, always burns) to VI (deeply pigmented, never burns). Most ethnic Kazakhs are III–IV. Most South Asians are IV–V. Many Northern Europeans are I–II. If you're uncertain, the clinic should patch-test before your first full session. A reputable clinic will offer this without you asking.
Realistic 2026 prices in Astana
Here are current per-session prices at premium English-speaking clinics on the Left Bank. Many clinics offer course discounts of 15–30% if you pay for 6 or 8 sessions up front. The discount is real, but only commit if you're confident you'll be in Astana long enough to use them — most clinics don't refund unused sessions, though some will let you transfer them to a friend.
| Zone | Per session (KZT) | USD (approx) |
|---|---|---|
| Upper lip | from 5,000 | ~$11 |
| Underarms | from 10,000 | ~$22 |
| Bikini (classic) | from 12,000 | ~$26 |
| Bikini (deep / Brazilian) | from 18,000 | ~$38 |
| Half legs | from 18,000 | ~$38 |
| Full legs | from 30,000 | ~$65 |
| Full arms | from 18,000 | ~$38 |
| Full body | from 65,000 | ~$140 |
For comparison: a single underarm session in London is typically £45–£90 (~$55–$110), and a full-leg session is £150–£280 (~$185–$345). A full course of 8 sessions on legs in London can easily reach $2,000+. The same course in Astana on the same equipment runs about $400–$500 total.
How many sessions you actually need
This is where most marketing oversimplifies. The real answer depends on the zone, your hormonal profile, and your hair-skin contrast. As a rule of thumb:
- Underarms, bikini, legs, arms: 6–8 sessions, spaced 5–8 weeks apart. Expect 80–90% permanent reduction.
- Face (upper lip, chin): 8–12 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Hormonal influence makes facial hair more stubborn.
- Men's chest, back, beard line: 8–10 sessions. Beard hair is particularly dense and often requires top-up sessions every 1–2 years.
- Anywhere with PCOS or post-pregnancy hormonal changes: the initial course works, but expect maintenance sessions every 6–12 months indefinitely.
Hair grows in three cycles (anagen, catagen, telogen), and the laser only effectively destroys hair in the active anagen phase — which is roughly 20–25% of follicles at any given time. That's why a single session, no matter how skilled, will never give complete results. Anyone promising "permanent removal in 3 sessions" is selling marketing, not science.
What to expect during your first session
Most foreign visitors are nervous about the first session because they don't know what's normal. Here's the honest version:
Before the session
Shave the area 12–24 hours before. Do not wax, epilate, or sugar for at least 4 weeks before — laser targets the hair root, and if you've removed it, there's nothing to target. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for 2 weeks before. Avoid retinoids on the area for 1 week. If you're on antibiotics that increase photosensitivity (doxycycline, tetracycline), tell the clinic — they may want to reschedule.
During
You'll wear protective glasses. The technician applies cooling gel (or the laser has a cooling tip), then moves the laser handpiece across the area in a grid pattern. Each pulse is a quick snap of warmth — most people compare it to a rubber band. Underarms take ~10 minutes. Full legs take 45–60 minutes. The bikini area is the most uncomfortable for almost everyone, regardless of pain tolerance.
Right after
The skin will be slightly red for 1–4 hours, like a mild sunburn. You'll see what looks like the hair "growing through" over the next 1–2 weeks — this is actually the destroyed hair shedding. Don't pluck or wax it; let it shed naturally. After it sheds, you'll have noticeably less hair in that area until the next cycle of follicles enters anagen, usually around the 5–8 week mark.
The next 48 hours
No hot baths, saunas, swimming pools, or intense workouts. No sun exposure. Use SPF 50 if the area will be exposed. No exfoliating scrubs or retinoids on the area for 7 days. Apply aloe vera gel or a fragrance-free moisturizer if the skin feels warm.
Red flags when choosing a clinic
Astana has clinics at every price point, and unfortunately not all of them are operated safely. Avoid any clinic that:
- Cannot tell you the laser brand and wavelength
- Doesn't ask about medications, recent sun exposure, or skin conditions before the first session
- Doesn't offer protective eyewear during the session
- Has a single technician operating without medical or cosmetological certification
- Skips a patch test on darker skin tones
- Promises permanent results in 3 or fewer sessions
- Pressures you into prepaying for a full course before any treatment
- Operates from a residential apartment (some unlicensed operators do this in Astana — the equipment may be real but the operator's training often isn't)
Specific advice for expats and visitors
If you're here on a 3+ month assignment: start your full course immediately. You'll save $1,000–$2,000 compared to the same course at home, and the difference more than pays for any maintenance sessions you might need elsewhere later.
If you're here for EXPO or a short trip (1–2 weeks): a single session before a vacation or important event can give you 4–6 weeks of significantly reduced hair growth. Useful, but not transformative. Don't pay for a course if you can't realistically attend the follow-ups.
If you've already started a course at home: most clinics in Astana will continue your course as long as you can describe what laser, what settings, and how many sessions you've completed. Bring a copy of your treatment record if possible. Switching laser types mid-course is generally fine but the clinician may need to adjust energy levels.
If you have darker skin: insist on Nd:YAG or specifically a long-pulse diode at a longer wavelength. Patch test first. Don't be shy about asking — a good technician will appreciate that you understand the technical question.
